What should I pack for a fishing trip in Colombia?

Clothing: Light, breathable clothes, a hat, polarized sunglasses, and a light jacket for cooler mornings or evenings.

– Footwear: Comfortable, non-slip shoes suitable for boat decks.

– Gear: Please note that we do not provide fishing gear. It is essential to bring your own gear and tackle. Prior to your trip, an Afloat representative will send you a list of recommended gear and tackle to ensure you are fully prepared. If needed, we can rent gear for an additional $100 per setup.

– Personal items: Sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and a small first aid kit.

– While some tourist areas and high-end establishments may accept US dollars, it is best to use Colombian pesos (COP) for most transactions. ATMs are widely available for withdrawing local currency and best for the exchange rate.

– Yellow Fever vaccination is highly recommended, especially if traveling to jungle regions.

Safety: Colombia is now a safe country and has become one of the most visited destinations in Latin America. It’s quite safe in cities and in areas where Afloat has its lodges. However, it is advisable to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas, and take standard precautions like using registered taxis or ubers and keeping valuables secure..

Credit cards are widely accepted in cities and larger towns, especially in hotels, restaurants, and shops. It’s still good to carry some cash for smaller, remote areas. You can also withdraw Colombian pesos with your card from ATMs.

Medellín: Explore Comuna 13 for street art, the Botanical Garden, Parque Arví for nature trails, El Poblado for nightlife, and Guatapé for its stunning rock formation and colorful town.

– Bogotá: Visit the Gold Museum, Monserrate Hill for panoramic views, La Candelaria for historic charm, and the Usaquén district for a lively market scene.

Colombia has a diverse climate. Coastal areas like Bahia Solano are warm and humid, while cities like Bogotá have a cooler, mountainous climate. We will help you plan according to your specific destination.

We recommend tipping 10-15% of the package value. Tips can be given in US currency or COP.

Seek medical attention at local clinics or hospitals. It’s wise to have travel insurance that covers health issues. Pharmacies are also widely available for minor ailments, don’t hesitate to contact us for any assistance needed.

Afloat provides ground shuttles from the airport to your hotel. For moving around the city, you can use Uber or inform us of your plans in advance, and we can arrange private chauffeurs, guides, and amazing activities for you in the main cities.

We offer basic medical insurance for your stay. However, we highly recommend purchasing global rescue insurance for additional coverage and peace of mind.

 In Medellín, Bogotá, and at our lodges, power connections use the standard Colombian 110V, 60Hz system with Type A and B plugs.

In main cities, you can use roaming services for internet and phone. At our lodges, standard internet connections are not available, but we offer Starlink for reliable connectivity.
